On August 31st, 1957, Malaysia declared its independence from British colonial rule, marking the birth of a nation rich in diversity and cultural heritage.  This day, known as Hari Merdeka, celebrates the coming together of various ethnic groups, languages, and traditions to forge a united Malaysian identity.
