On July 5th, 1975, the Republic of Cape Verde, also known as Cape Verde, declared independence from Portuguese colonial rule. The archipelago, long used as a port in the Atlantic slave trade, began a new chapter grounded in freedom, identity, and cultural revival. Made up of ten islands off the coast of West Africa, Cape Verde is known for its Creole traditions, vibrant music, and strong sense of community. The people of Cape Verde have built a proud and peaceful democracy, marked by stability and resilience despite limited natural resources. Liberation Day is a time of national joy and reflection. Parades, concerts, and poetry readings fill the streets, while families gather to share food and stories. July 5th serves as a celebration of how a small island nation can stand tall with unity, strength, and soul at its core. |
